Celebrating Pat McDermott: One of Canada’s Favourite Crossing Guards
We are incredibly proud to celebrate Pat McDermott, our dedicated crossing guard at ASIA North Poplar, who has been named one of Canada’s Favourite Crossing Guards for 2025 by Parachute Canada.
Pat was recognized today with a special school-wide assembly, where the entire ASIA North Poplar community came together to honour his well-deserved achievement. Students filled the gym with applause and smiles as Pat was presented with his award by Principal Rachel Lack, Tracey O’Hara - Manager of Transportation, and Dr. Shazya Karmali of BC Children’s Hospital, BCIRPU (BC Injury Research and Prevention Unit), who attended on behalf of Parachute. Members of the PAC, who proudly nominated Pat for this national recognition, were also on hand to help celebrate this special moment.
Adding to the joy of the day, every class at the school created handmade cards for Pat, which were presented to him during the assembly. Pat was also surprised with heartfelt video messages from his daughter and granddaughters, congratulating him on this national recognition.
Pat began working the crosswalk at ASIA North Poplar when his grandchildren attended the school. While they have long since moved on, Pat’s commitment never wavered and he remains a familiar, friendly presence each morning and afternoon. His impact goes far beyond helping students cross the street safely. Pat takes the time to listen, chat, and make sure students start their day with a smile. His kindness, consistency, and genuine care for student well-being have made him a trusted and valued member of the school community.
We are so lucky to have Pat as part of our Abby Schools team. Today’s celebration, and this national honour, are a true testament to his dedication, compassion, and the positive difference he makes in the lives of our students every single day.
Congratulations, Pat!
