Vaisakhi Celebrations 2026

April 14, 2026

Drum beats and rhythmic footwork echoed through school gyms across the district in recent days as students, staff, and families came together to celebrate Vaisakhi, a spring festival celebrated by many in the Sikh community and across cultures, marking renewal, harvest, and new beginnings.

In Abbotsford, where Sikh families are an important and valued part of the community, these celebrations reflect the lived experiences and identities of many students and families across the district.

While celebrations occurred throughout the district, a highlight each year is the joint Vaisakhi assembly hosted by Abbotsford Traditional School, bringing together students from King Traditional Elementary and South Poplar Traditional Elementary for one large, high-energy celebration. This long-standing tradition adds to the strong connection between the three schools, creating a shared experience through performances, music, and community spirit.

This year’s event featured dynamic Bhangra performances from the Abbotsford Traditional School team, alongside live dhol performances that filled the space with energy and excitement. The celebration extended beyond the gym, continuing outdoors after school where performances carried on as families arrived, drawing in parents and community members.

Students also took initiative in shaping their school-based celebrations. At King Traditional Elementary, students led their Vaisakhi assembly, taking on speaking roles, managing slides, and running music from start to finish. The celebration was attended by Trustee Arsh Khaler, who previously spent five years teaching at King Traditional, adding a meaningful connection to the school community.

To continue the shared experience, both elementary dance teams travelled to Abbotsford Traditional School the following week to perform in assemblies, further strengthening the connection across all three schools.

The momentum continues, with North Poplar Traditional Elementary set to welcome Bhangra dancers next week, organized by the school's PAC, further extending opportunities for students to experience and engage with the celebration.

Across the district, schools marked Vaisakhi in diverse ways. Social posts from Máthxwi Elementary and Ten-Broeck Elementary reflect how students and staff engaged in learning, celebration, and community-building.

These moments provide meaningful opportunities for students to share culture, build understanding, and experience belonging. Vaisakhi celebrations across Abbotsford School District are one example of how learning comes to life through community connection and student voice.
